Every Source, Named

Nothing on a print is ours alone. These are the people and projects it stands on. The same list is kept as data at /sources.json.

The survey

  • Every outline, hole, green, fairway, bunker and water feature: © OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database License 1.0. Every print credits them in its margin, with the date the data was read.
  • Search: Nominatim, run by the OpenStreetMap Foundation, asked only when you press the button, as its usage policy asks.
  • The survey of each course: the Overpass API, from the main instance run by FOSSGIS e.V., and from VK's public instance when the main one is busy.
  • Tagging: the golf course page of the OpenStreetMap wiki, CC BY-SA 2.0.

The lengths

  • T. Vincenty's inverse formula for geodesics on the ellipsoid, Survey Review 23(176), 88 to 93, April 1975, doi:10.1179/sre.1975.23.176.88.
  • C. F. F. Karney, Test set for geodesics, CC0. Our tests hold every length to it within 1 mm; the worst error was 0.07 mm.
  • One yard is 0.9144 metres exactly, by the international yard and pound agreement of 1959.

The ground

Architect's contour lines and Aerial's relief come from the Terrain Tiles on the Registry of Open Data on AWS, built by Mapzen's open-source joerd. Your browser fetches them for the proof and our server fetches them again for the print. The tile set's attribution document requires this credit, which we carry as written:

  • ArcticDEM terrain data DEM(s) were created from DigitalGlobe, Inc., imagery and funded under National Science Foundation awards 1043681, 1559691, and 1542736;
  • Australia terrain data © Commonwealth of Australia (Geoscience Australia) 2017;
  • Austria terrain data © offene Daten Österreichs – Digitales Geländemodell (DGM) Österreich;
  • Canada terrain data contains information licensed under the Open Government Licence – Canada;
  • Europe terrain data produced using Copernicus data and information funded by the European Union - EU-DEM layers;
  • Global ETOPO1 terrain data U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

  • United Kingdom terrain data © Environment Agency copyright and/or database right 2015. All rights reserved;
  • United States 3DEP (formerly NED) and global GMTED2010 and SRTM terrain data courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey.

A print in either style names the U.S. Geological Survey, NOAA and EU-DEM in its margin and sends the reader to this page for the rest.
